How Has Fashion Retail Changed?
Over 110 years have passed since the great Harry Gordon Selfridge recreated the the department store and created a world wide phenomenon and tourist attraction "Selfridges". So since the creation how has it changed? Well from being the first British department store to advertise on television to "The Best Department Store In The World" Selfridges has really changed the retail industry. Selfridges gave people the freedom to independently shop, but since we've taken it one step further. Online shopping really made its mark in the world, when ASOS (As Seen On Screen) and Ebay began in around 2000. Making shopping so much easier, quicker and straight to your door. Online shopping was the source of speed and simplicity and in fact the percentage of people willing to shop online and are confident with shopping online it over 67% which is an incredible amount and more than half the population. Online shopping is what is keeping businesses and brands alive with so many new ways to develop, its a never ending way to please the public and we are now even creating drones to deliver our goods. Instore shopping is just as good, with new technology we have been able to create simulations and virtual realities to shop. In fact Tommy Hilfiger became the first major retailer to develop virtual reality headsets in stores, inviting shoppers to immerse them self in a full 360 degrees winter/fall fashion show. Personally I believe social media has had the biggest impact and influence in changing retail. Social media, has become the biggest worldwide platform nearly everyone and anyone uses it. Its a place where we can share and create almost anything. It has really opened the world of retail, reaching it to a wider, a much wider audience. Social media has a massive impact on the competitiveness between brands in the industry too, for example take Calvin Klein, who have created there own social media recognition using the hashtag #mycalvins and #mycalvinsfamily where everyone can share and feel apart of the trend they have created. They also use social media to gain more recognition by have influencers and celebrities such as Kendal Jenner, the Kardasians and even youtubers such as Arden Rose to promote there brand by wearing there clothes and underwear and using the hashtag. Where as brands such as Forever 21 for example don't use social media as well, so don't gain as much success. Its all about getting out there on social media nowadays, I mean thats where all the youngsters are, and they are the generation who are the most heavily influenced and thats why I think social media has been the biggest and most important change in the fashion retail industry.
